Island Cats Updated Face Mask Policy

As most of us are aware, mask recommendations are frequently changing and we at Island Cats Veterinary Hospital try to keep up on the most recent advice from the Center for Disease Control.

Effective immediately, we are no longer requiring clients to wear a face mask while in the building. We will continue to provide masks to those clients who still choose to wear a mask indoors. You may still see some of our staff wearing masks for their own protection, as well as in exam rooms since it is a small space.

We still ask that only one client accompanies their pet into the exam rooms unless it is a critical case. If you are feeling ill, have tested positive for Covid, or have been exposed please follow the CDC guidelines for isolation and reschedule your appointment if needed.

The safety and health of our clients and staff is paramount. We will continue to keep everyone advised if there are any further changes.

The most important part of being an animal caregiver is making sure that special little guy or gal stays as healthy and happy for as many years as possible. The best way to achieve this goal is by making a commitment to wellness care. Island Cats Veterinary Hospital offers comprehensive wellness care for all stages of life. We can help give your loved one the best chance at a long, happy, and healthy life.

What is “wellness care”?

Wellness care is really just a fancy phrase for annual checkups. During a wellness visit, the doctor will conduct a thorough physical exam, checking to make sure your cat’s body is functioning just as it should be. We’ll also discuss with you a number of topics that are vital to keeping your loved one happy and healthy, such as vaccinations, parasite control, nutrition and weight management, behavior, and more.

The information we gather during your pet’s exams helps us to develop a baseline of what’s considered to be “normal” for them. Every cat is different, so it’s important that we are able to understand what “healthy” for your pet looks like. This gives us something to compare future exams and diagnostic tests to moving forward. That way, if and when something changes, it will be easy to spot so it can be addressed right away before it has a chance to develop into something more serious and costly.

Island Cats Veterinary Hospital understands that we must work as a team to keep your pet healthy and happy. We’re looking forward to seeing you and getting to know you and your new kitten better.

Kittens require the same kind of attention as newborns. This necessitates frequent vet visits for the first few months of life. Island Cats Veterinary Hospital is here to assist you in providing your kitten with the care and support they require to thrive.

We will focus on vaccinations, parasite prevention, microchipping, spaying/neutering, and nutritional needs.

Vaccines

Vaccines offer protection against major viral and bacterial diseases that cats may be exposed to. Your veterinarian will set up a vaccination program for your cat to provide protection for the diseases of concern in your area. Kittens often require an initial vaccination with follow-up booster vaccines to ensure they are well protected against diseases.

Following a proper vaccination schedule will help to ensure that you are doing your part to keep your new friend healthy. Additionally, we recommend that all cats be placed on a monthly parasite preventative and be tested regularly for parasites.

Flea & Parasite Prevention

You may not always be able to tell if your cat has parasites. Fleas can hide under your pet’s fur, and if your pet grooms regularly the fleas may be ingested without you knowing it. Ingesting fleas can lead to a parasitic infection. Intestinal parasites can cause diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration, and other problems, but some infected pets don’t show any signs at all. Regular flea prevention can help prevent a flea infestation and decrease your cat’s risk of getting parasites.

Mircochipping

Microchips are tiny electronic devices, about the size of a grain of rice, that use radio waves to transmit identification information. Pet microchips store unique identification numbers that show once the chip is scanned. This number can be reported to the appropriate microchip company where the owners’ contact information is stored. Microchips are made of a material that is compatible with body tissues, so rejection and infection at the site of microchip injection are rare.

Senior Cat Care

Senior cats have special needs as they age. The best way to help protect your pet as he or she ages is to understand the aging process in cats. We understand that process and can help you help your pet. Even if your senior cat is already being treated for a medical condition, treatment recommendations can change as a condition progresses. Sometimes medication dosages need to be adjusted, or medication may need to be changed. Routine wellness blood work and other routine diagnostic testing are important for senior pets because these tests allow us to evaluate how your pet’s health is either responding to current management strategies or changing with age.
